Burrows Newsagent, a beloved family-run shop in Ely, has closed its doors after 125 years of service. Founded in 1899 by James Frederick Burrows, the shop became a cornerstone of the community, passed down through four generations of the Burrows family.
Owner Jeff Burrows, who took over in 1973, decided to retire, marking the end of an era for the historic newsagent. The shop was known for its early morning openings at 5 AM, its commitment to cash-only transactions, and its role in employing hundreds of paperboys and papergirls over the decades.
On its final day, April 26, the shop saw an outpouring of love from the community, with customers bringing cards and gifts to express their gratitude. Sadly, Jeff was unable to attend due to illness, but his niece Annabel Reddick, the store’s only full-time employee, was there to witness the heartfelt tributes.
Burrows Newsagent will be remembered as a hub of local interaction, reliability, and tradition. You can read more about its closure here.
